FIBER – The ultimate communication technology
What is GC Fiber?
Geneseo Communications has begun the process of replacing its copper network with a state-of-the-art fiber optic network that will carry communication services using light waves instead of electricity. In the communications industry, such networks are known as Fiber-to-the-Premise, FTTP. FTTP is the most advanced communication system available in the world today, and will be the technology relied upon worldwide to deliver communications in the future. Although our current copper network has allowed us to offer superior quality communication services, copper networks (like ours or those offered by cable companies) will soon be unable to provide the bandwidth necessary to offer new, exciting technologies like 100 mbps internet service, HD streaming video, advanced voice services, and many others. While many communications providers brag about utilizing “fiber” in their networks, unless they provide it all the way to the premise, they can’t measure up. That is why Geneseo Communications is going all the way to your home or business with Fiber, and why we will be able to offer the fastest, most reliable, most capable, highest quality communication products available in the area.

Why Fiber is better than Cable?
Cable can’t compare! Don’t mistake the claims of some companies that say they have an “enhanced fiber optic network.” What they have is a hybrid connection mixing a single fiber line with the aging technology of coaxial cable. What’s the difference? Fiber-to-the-Premise is a 100% fiber optic connection made directly to your home or business with the ability to carry large quantities of data an enormous distance – much faster.
Fiber technology delivers clear advantages over standard coaxial cable:
- Fiber is unquestionably the fastest, most versatile high-speed internet connection
- Virtually unlimited bandwidth – the sky’s the limit
- Get the speed you pay for all the time! No Internet slowdowns during peak hours
- Crystal clear voice communication with less interference and reliable 911 service
- Better video experience – see higher quality streaming video on your computer
- No modem required*
- Geneseo Communications superior customer service – most service calls handled the same day and we supply 24/7 tech support by phone
*refers to wired connection. Wireless service or multiple devices connected to the internet require a router.
Fiber-to-the-Premises Project Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fiber-to-the-Premise? Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) refers to the installation and use of fiber optic cables to carry digital information directly to homes and businesses. These cables are made up of hundreds of fiber optics, which are long thin strands of pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. Geneseo Communications is preparing to deliver fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) technology to several of its service areas during the next few years. This involves upgrading the existing copper wire network to fiber optic cable, and connecting it directly to residential and commercial buildings. Fiber optic cable is capable of delivering data at high speeds and has a much greater bandwidth capacity than cable modem or copper delivered services.
What are the advantages of having fiber run directly to my home or business? By providing fiber optic cable to the premises, Geneseo Communications will be able to deliver regular phone service, High Speed Internet and even broadband video all over one line and will still have room for other new telecommunication technologies that may be developed during the next 20-30 years.
What other benefits will FTTP bring? Fiber technology provides almost unlimited bandwidth, which means it has thousands of the transmission capacity of cable modem or copper technology. Fiber optic cables carry voice, data and video signals at speeds well over 20 times faster than today’s fastest high-speed data connections by using laser-generated pulses of light to transmit the signals. This allows FTTP to accommodate a wide variety of data and video applications, from interactive content and telecommuting to audio and video on demand. By upgrading to FTTP Geneseo Communications will be able to provide the absolute latest technology for the next generation, which could lead to increased property values and promote economic development.
Will fiber change the way my present communication services work? No. In fact, Geneseo Communication customers will likely notice an improvement in the quality and reliability of their current services. If you are a High-Speed Broadband customer with Geneseo Communications, you will no longer need a modem. The broadband Ethernet cable that comes into your home or business will plug directly into your wireless router, network or computer. As Geneseo Communications deploys fiber optics throughout your neighborhood, you’ll continue receiving the same dependable Local and Long Distance Telephone service you’ve come to expect. Fiber gives us increased capacity so we’ll be able to offer you enhanced services all over the same line, including faster Broadband Internet speeds with greater download and upload delivery. This technology still leaves additional bandwidth for future applications. While it’s impossible to know what your future bandwidth needs will be, we know for sure that fiber optic cable will be capable of handling those needs! Other broadband technologies used today, such as wireless and cable modem, are already struggling to support bandwidth-heavy services. Geneseo Communications investment into a Fiber Optics Network ensures as more products and services become broadband-enabled, your connection will be powerful enough to serve your needs today and tomorrow.
What will happen when we come to your neighborhood?
- You will receive a mailer from us stating when we plan to begin construction in your neighborhood.
- Geneseo Communications will begin to plow fiber to your home or business and mount new boxes on the outside.
- Geneseo Communications will schedule a time to come back to your location to install an indoor power supply unit and perform some rewiring of your services.
- We will contact you with some new and special offers available only to a fiber connected homes or businesses.
Where will the new fiber be installed? The new fiber cable will run underground and connect directly to residential and commercial buildings in your neighborhood.
Does any special equipment need to be installed in or on my house? Geneseo Communications will need to place a new device called an ONT (Optic Network Terminal) on the outside of the premise. It contains the electronics necessary to convert the optical signal from the fiber to an electronic signal required by the telephone. This may or may not be where the old connection was, depending upon several factors. A separate power source will also need to be placed inside the premise to supply power to the ONT. This power source is equipped with a battery that will support power to the ONT in the event of a commercial power outage. In some cases a new wired outlet near the power supply may be required to ensure service can be delivered at the desired level of quality, which Geneseo Communications will provide at no cost. The battery within the power source carries a 2 to 3 year life and may need to be replaced for a nominal cost to the customer. A Geneseo Communications technician will meet personally with each property owner to discuss the placement of the above mentioned equipment at their location.
Will getting fiber to my home/business disturb my yard/property? A small slice line is needed to bring the fiber optic cable up to the outside of your home or business. This slice line is very slight and will cause minimal disruption to your property. Geneseo Communications will make every effort to leave personal property in good repair at the end of the project.
Does every home/business in my neighborhood need the fiber upgrade? When upgrading Fiber-to-the-Premise the entire area must be completed. The old copper cabling will no longer be maintained and will be retired once service is cut over to fiber optic cable. This is the case regardless of whether or not you subscribe to any advanced services, such as high-speed broadband that Geneseo Communications offers. Keep in mind that fiber to your home will not only enhance your entertainment and communication experience, it also will increase the value of your home and property.
What if I don’t currently subscribe to any Geneseo Communication services? Well now is the time! Some people currently receive telephone and Internet services via a cable modem, which has limited bandwidth capacity and can be very slow in receiving and transmitting data. The farther your home or office is from your providers location, the slower your data delivery is. Fiber optic cable, on the other hand, is a thin strand of glass that allows pulses of light (data) to pass from one end to the other. Since light can travel great distances over fiber optic cable without any weakening of the signal, the speed of data delivered via fiber optic cable is not distance-dependent. This is the purest form of connectivity, delivering the full benefit of bandwidth with no limits to speed or capacity unlike the antiquated cable modem you might be using. Fiber optic technology has not only proven to be a more reliable and efficient way to serve our telephone and Internet customers, it also positions us to better meet your future needs.
