When most people think about protecting their devices, they think about antivirus software on a laptop or being careful about opening phishing emails on a phone. The router sitting in the corner of the living room rarely comes up. That’s a problem, because the router is the front door to every device in your home, and a surprising number of home routers have been left unprotected for years.

Understanding where routers fall short and what you can do to secure them is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your home network.

One Entry Point with Multiple Vulnerabilities

Every device in your home connects to the internet through your router. Your phones, laptops, smart TV, security cameras, and thermostat all pass through it. That makes the router the single most important security point on your network. If a criminal finds a way into your router, they have a potential path to everything behind it.

That’s a problem when a router comes with several vulnerabilities out of the box.

  • Default Settings: Most routers ship with a default admin username and password set by the manufacturer. Those credentials are documented publicly, meaning anyone can find them. Change your router’s default admin username and password to protect against direct access into your network. Use a strong, unique password, and don’t reuse it from other accounts.   • Outdated Firmware: Firmware is the software loaded on your router to keep it running. Manufacturers release firmware updates when security vulnerabilities are discovered, but those updates only protect you if they get installed. Routers that don’t update automatically, or are never updated manually, can sit exposed to known vulnerabilities for months or years. Check your router’s settings to see whether automatic firmware updates are available and enable them if so. If your router doesn’t offer automatic updates, make a habit of logging into the settings a few times a year to check for updates manually.
  • Old Hardware: Firmware updates only help if the manufacturer is still releasing them for the router. When a router reaches “end of life,” the manufacturer stops supporting it entirely. Any vulnerability discovered after that point stays open permanently. Some malwares don’t even require a password to get in. They scan for open ports and exploits known vulnerabilities to take over the device. Once a router is compromised this way, it can be used to monitor traffic, route criminal activity through your network, or provide access to other devices in your home, often without any obvious sign that anything is wrong. If your router is five or more years old, it’s worth checking online to see whether it’s still receiving security updates or whether upgrading makes sense.
  • Cheap Equipment: Budget routers and WiFi extenders from unknown manufacturers are inexpensive for a reason. They may use outdated encryption standards, have little to no history of releasing firmware updates, or carry known vulnerabilities that will never be patched. An off-brand extender plugged into your network creates a secondary entry point, and if it’s not secure, it can undermine an otherwise well-configured setup. When buying networking equipment or smart home devices, stick to recognized manufacturers with a documented history of security updates.

Network-Level Protection Means

There’s an important difference between protecting a device and protecting a network. Antivirus software installed on a laptop protects that laptop alone. It doesn’t see traffic going to your security camera or your kids’ tablet, and it can’t do anything about threats that arrive through your router before reaching any other device.

And unlike your laptop, other devices don’t have the same kind of optional and additional protections. Your smart TV, doorbell camera, or thermostat don’t run antivirus software. The router is where protection for all those devices must happen.

Network-level security works at the router itself, monitoring all traffic flowing into and out of your home before it reaches any device. That means every connected device in the home is protected, including the ones that can’t run their own security software.

A Secure Network Starts at the Router

A few changes now can close most of the vulnerabilities at your router that leave your home networks exposed.
